Functional Capacity Evaluation

A Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) is a thorough and intensive four-hour evaluation that focuses on physical tolerance and abilities related to strength, endurance, speed and flexibility.

We utilize the Matheson System, which focuses on the core values of:

  • Safety
  • Reliability
  • Validity
  • Practicality
  • Utility
A comprehensive interview reviewing all past and present medical history will be followed by physical assessment of any of the following as they apply to the occupation in question:
  • walking
  • bending
  • stooping
  • climbing stairs
  • ladder use
  • crawling
  • squatting
  • kneeling
  • overhead tasks
  • tool usage
  • lifting
  • sitting
  • standing
  • pushing
  • pulling
  • typing
  • grip
  • finger dexterity
  • range of motion, etc.

It allows the doctor to assess if the patient can return to work, and at what demand level they can work.

The patient should wear the clothes they would wear to work. It is also recommended to bring bottled water and eat breakfast or lunch before they come for their appointment.
